The vast majority of Linux users can't understand C, let alone know enough about it to be able to read and understand the code in the Linux kernel, let alone have the time and resources necessary to scrutinise it and submit patches. There's a big difference between people being able to look at it it if they want to and people actually looking at it. The "whole world" doesn't have eyes on the Linux code base though. In case of Windows is only Microsoft eyes that see the source-code, in case of Linux is the whole world so i don't really have to worry :>

It's worth maybe a little bit of supposed "bloat" or paying however much a key costs just to know I'm not getting a free keylogger. In the final analysis they're not doing anything much more secure (in the sense of not running untrustworthy code) than the average Windows user.įor my part as much as I want to stay sane I wouldn't do anything like use this random "debloater" stuff or even pirate Windows (especially given how piss cheap Windows 11 keys can be had for). It's not really a dig at Linux, I'm just never convinced by assertions that "Linux is open source so it must be secure with nothing weird in the code" because ultimately most people, if they want to stay sane, will just wind up installing whatever binaries Debian/Fedora/Ubuntu/etc package for them, or even on things like Gentoo just build source code using a script without ever really looking at it. The only people who would expect that are the likes of Richard M Stallman who, well, they're just bluntly very weird.

Yeah that's the thing, I don't think anyone could ever be expected to read and understand all of the source code of every piece of software you ever use. Hide Flairs Show Flairs Hide Help Posts.
